Transporting your Bunny

If you are considering buying a bunny, or already have one, a portable carrier is a good investment.  When or how would you use it?

* Trips to vet

* Trips to a sitter's house if you go out of town and leave your bunny with someone else

*  A place for your bunny to hang out while you clean its cage

* As an alternate place for your bunny to sleep

* A portable, enclosed environment that you can relocate to a quieter place during fireworks, holidays or times when you have a lot of guests

Great, so there are a ton of carriers out there.  Can we narrow down the possibilities?  Here are things you might want to look for:

* A front door AND a top door.  It's much easier to get a bunny out of a small container from the top.

* Ideally, the bottom would sit lower than the door by at least an inch.  This will help keep pee, poop and spilled water inside the carrier and away from your floors

* Enough space for your bunny to turn around

* A place to hang a water bottle - even if it's tricky, place for a food cup is a bonus

* If you can find a carrier with a plastic grid bottom, even better.  This will allow you to add a puppy pad underneath to absorb spills.

Here are my top two choices for dwarf breed rabbits.

Rabbit carrier

1.  The Marchioro Binny 2

This is my favorite for short trips.  It has plenty of ventilation, and it opens from the top.  See that little blue door?  It's a compartment where you can store meds, treats, your keys, etc.  The little clear door opposite, can be pulled back, and you can reach down into the carrier and pet your bunny, or check on it without having to open the whole thing.  The strap is nice too, because a bulky plastic thing is not the most comfortable thing to carry.  But wait, there's more.  Check out the next picture.

The included food cup is a great feature.  It locks right on to the side of the carrier, preventing your bunny from tipping in over and wasting all the food.  I also love the plastic grid floor.  It's very flexible, so it's easy on your bunny's feet.  If you add newspaper or a puppy pad, you can keep your bunny's feet clean and dry.  Finally, notice how the bottom third of the carrier is solid?  It keeps liquids from leaking out the bottom onto your carpet for car seats.

2. The Amazon Basics

This carrier is exactly what it claims to be - a nice compilation of good traits and a reasonable price.  Looking it over, you have the raised door edge on the bottom for retaining liquids/messes.  The top door can open half way or lift off entirely.  The sides snap apart for easy cleaning.  The door latch is nice and strong.  It is nice and roomy and is available in two sizes for only a slight up charge.  In terms of food cups and water bottles, you have limited space as both must be attached to the door (ventilation holes are small, even for zip ties).  All things considered though, this is a great carrier.
